At this event, CGS Postdoctoral Research Associate Kowan O'Keefe will present his research on the impact of political uncertainty on climate and energy policy in Canada.
Abstract: Recent political developments in Canada including the resignation of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Mark Carney’s victory in the Liberal Party leadership race to replace Trudeau as Prime Minister, an imminent federal election call, and uncertainty over the bilateral relationship with the United States have made the first few months of 2025 among the most consequential months in Canadian political history. These political uncertainties stand to have enormous impacts on the course of Canadian climate and energy policy. Scenario analysis using the Global Change Analysis Model (GCAM) is well-suited to explore the implications of these political uncertainties. Following a brief overview of existing research, new scenarios will be presented exploring the impact of political uncertainty on Canadian climate and energy policy pathways.
