Joudat Khalil

Back to Faculty & Staff

Joudat Khalil most recently worked at the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) at the University of Maryland, where her work focused on coupling integrated assessment models with power system models. She contributed to the NSF-funded project “Nexus Exploration of Opportunities in Uruguay and Argentina (NEXO-UA),” developing a coupled GCAM–GridPath framework to design decarbonization scenarios and assess the impacts of climate targets on power system operations in the South American subregion. Her recent research has also examined how riverine biodiversity conservation criteria affect hydropower expansion under deep decarbonization pathways. In addition, she collaborated with researchers at CGS and contributed to the development of the GridPath model for the ASEAN Power Grid, supporting analyses of grid infrastructure investment and operations under different energy-economic pathways. Prior to her work at ESSIC, Khalil served as a project lead for Committed, an EU DG CLIMA-funded project, at the Centre for Water Informatics and Technology (WIT) at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), Pakistan. Her broader research interests include global energy modeling, multisector dynamics and integrated solutions at the intersection of energy, land use and water systems to address complex challenges related to climate change, socio-environmental impacts and sustainable development. As part of her graduate research, she studied ground-level ozone trends and their implications for crop yield losses during winter smog seasons. Khalil holds a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the Lahore University of Management Sciences.
