Join CGS on Monday, November 14th for a discussion with renowned developmental and environmental economist Budy Resosudarmo. Register to join us in person at the School of Public Policy or tune in virtually.
About the discussion: Indonesia has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions to 29% below business-as-usual by 2030, or by 41% contingent on sufficient international financial support. In its first long-term strategy in 2021, Indonesia laid out its plans to achieve peak emissions in 2030 and reach net-zero emissions by 2060 or sooner through a net-sink in the forest and land use sector, reducing deforestation, rehabilitating damaged forests and peatlands, and increasing the share of renewables in its energy mix. However, achieving these goals will require balancing land use change and coal phaseout with development and environmental justice, especially concerning deforestation and growth in the biofuels industry. Dr. Resosudarmo will discuss the context of climate policies in Indonesia, challenges to achieving their climate goals, and opportunities for developing Indonesia-US work on sustainability research and implementation.
About the speaker: Budy P. Resosudarmo is a developmental and environmental economist and professor at the Australian National University in the Crawford School of Public Policy where he has recently been focusing on development and environmental issues in Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia. He also works on interlinks between natural shocks and environmental conditions and local economies, household incomes, human development, and the environment, and investigates the political economy of environmental policies and resource utilization. More recently, the focus of his research has been on energy transformation and integration, disaster management and insurances, and development in lagging regions.
