Nate Hultman, Director of the Center for Global Sustainability (CGS) at the University of Maryland, was appointed to the Maryland Commission on Climate Change (Commission) to serve on the Greenhouse Gas Mitigation Working Group (MWG). Since 2015, the Commission has been charged with advising the Governor of Maryland and the Maryland General Assembly on "ways to mitigate the causes of, prepare for, and adapt to the consequences of climate change" and comprises a wide range of critical stakeholders.
Serving as an academic institution representative, Hultman will support “the charge of the Commission for proposing regulatory, market-based, and voluntary programs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while supporting economic development and job creation,” through informed policy-making, emissions reductions, and broad climate action within the state.
“With the highly ambitious Climate Solutions Now Act of 2022, Maryland is again placed as a climate leader in the United States and is one of the many reasons I am proud to be a Marylander," CGS Director Nate Hultman said. "I am honored to accept this nomination and help serve the state both through the MWG and at CGS to help work through options and strategies for achieving the climate goals successfully."
Hultman’s new appointment further exemplifies the collaboration between the CGS and the State of Maryland to extend state and local climate action in support of national and global goals. This June, CGS will release a comprehensive, feasible draft pathway demonstrating how Maryland can achieve its ambitious climate goals of 60% reduction by 2031 and net zero emissions by 2045. In partnership with the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE), this analysis will identify viable and new state policies to help Maryland reduce emissions while extending resources, cost-savings, new jobs, cleaner air, safer homes and roads, food security, and so much more.
Follow along with the Greenhouse Gas Mitigation Working Group to learn more about their work developing greenhouse gas reduction recommendations. The MWG members meet virtually monthly, hosted by the Maryland Department of the Environment. Meetings are open to everyone and include time for public comment.
