In this seminar, CGS Assistant Research Director Jiehong Lou and Research Associate Molly Schreier will share their work on CGS's recently released Nickel Smelter Dataset, developed to inform future energy modeling and environmental impact assessment efforts.

Abstract: The Center for Global Sustainability Nickel Smelter Dataset provides a comprehensive stocktake of 106 nickel smelter projects in Indonesia and compiles detailed information on operational status, location, company ownership, processing type, and capacity. This verified, geolocated dataset offers a snapshot of Indonesia's nickel processing sector and illuminates several key trends, including a shift towards hydrometallurgical plants in the pipeline, a heavy reliance on captive coal, and difficulties maintaining consistent operations amidst raw material supply constraints. This presentation will provide an overview of our data collection methodology, kind findings, and opportunities to inform future energy modeling and environmental impact assessment efforts.
